As part of the Greater Sossusvlei Namib Landscape Conservation Initiative under the NAMPLACE Project of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism,  18 animals (9 mountain zebra and 9 oryx) were collared in and around the Namib Naukluft Park in the following sections: Ganab, Tsondab-Naukluft Area, Sesriem-Sossusvlei-Elim area and Namib Rand – Chowagas Mountain Range areas. The collaring exercise went very well without any major problems or challenges. A total of 18 animals were immobilised chemically for collaring purposes. No mortalities directly associated with the immobilisation or collaring has been observed or recorded so far.

The collars were deployed on 22 & 23 November 2013 and should give location data for a period of two years or so, allowing us to build up a better understanding of where these animals move and how environmental factors such as rainfall are influencing their movements.
